Drug Dependence

மருந்து அடிமைத்தனம்

NCERT Class 12 · Human Health and Disease · 1 NEET question

Drug dependence is not a choice; it is a physiological hijacking of your homeostatic mechanisms. The brain’s reward pathway, specifically the dopaminergic system, is rewired to demand the substance. If you think you can quit anytime, you have already lost the biological battle.

The idea

Dependence is the body's tendency to manifest a characteristic and unpleasant withdrawal syndrome when the regular dose of drugs or alcohol is abruptly discontinued. This syndrome occurs because the body has adapted to the presence of the substance. Symptoms include anxiety, shakiness, nausea, and sweating. These physiological reactions force the individual to continue the intake to avoid the distress.

Why it matters

The body adapts to the presence of the drug by altering receptor sensitivity, making the system dependent on the substance to maintain homeostasis.

NEET lens

NEET focuses heavily on the definition of 'withdrawal syndrome' and its specific symptoms. Memorize the list: anxiety, shakiness, and nausea. Do not confuse 'dependence' with 'addiction' or 'tolerance'—NCERT defines dependence specifically through the withdrawal syndrome. Expect at least one matching-type question on drug categories and their physiological effects.

Clinical significance

Chronic dependence leads to the downregulation of neurotransmitter receptors in the central nervous system. This causes long-term neurochemical imbalances, often resulting in permanent cognitive impairment or psychiatric disorders. The failure of the body to maintain internal stability without the drug indicates a complete breakdown of neuro-regulatory control.

Introduction

Dependence is the tendency of the body to show a characteristic and unpleasant withdrawal syndrome if the regular dose of a drug or alcohol is abruptly stopped.

Core concept

With repeated use, the tolerance level of the receptors in the body increases, so higher doses are needed — this leads to addiction. Withdrawal syndrome includes anxiety, shakiness, nausea and sweating, and may be relieved when use is resumed; in some cases it can be severe and even life-threatening, needing medical supervision. Dependence leads people to ignore social norms to get sufficient funds to satisfy their needs. Effects of drug/alcohol abuse: reckless behaviour, vandalism, violence; excessive doses can cause coma and death due to respiratory failure, heart failure or cerebral haemorrhage; intravenous use risks AIDS and hepatitis B; chronic alcohol use damages the nervous system and liver (cirrhosis). Drug effects (NCERT): opioids (heroin, morphine) are depressants that slow body functions; cocaine interferes with dopamine transport and causes euphoria; nicotine stimulates the adrenal gland to release adrenaline and noradrenaline, raising blood pressure and heart rate.

Go deeper

Prevention and control: avoid undue peer pressure, education and counselling, seeking help from parents and peers, looking for danger signs, and seeking professional and medical help — psychologists, psychiatrists, de-addiction and rehabilitation programmes.

From Class 10

Some substances change how the brain works, so the body starts to need them. Stopping suddenly makes a person feel very unwell — that is dependence.
