Antibody Structure
ஆன்டிபாடி அமைப்பு
Your immune system is not a shield; it is a precision-engineered protein factory. If you cannot identify the H2L2 structure, you are ignoring the primary weapon against pathogens. Stop guessing and start visualizing the Y-shaped immunoglobulin.
The idea
An antibody molecule is a Y-shaped glycoprotein composed of four polypeptide chains. It contains two identical light (L) chains and two identical heavy (H) chains, denoted as H2L2. These chains are held together by disulfide bonds. B-lymphocytes synthesize these molecules to neutralize specific antigens.
Why it matters
The specific structure allows for high-affinity binding to diverse antigens, enabling the immune system to recognize and neutralize a wide array of foreign invaders.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the H2L2 notation and the disulfide bond linkage. Do not confuse the heavy and light chain lengths. Remember, these are produced by B-lymphocytes, not T-lymphocytes. Expect a diagram-based question asking to label the chains.
Clinical significance
Deficiencies in antibody production lead to primary immunodeficiency disorders like Agammaglobulinemia. Without functional H2L2 structures, the body cannot opsonize or neutralize bacteria, leading to recurrent, life-threatening infections. The structural integrity of these proteins is the difference between health and systemic sepsis.
Introduction
Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins produced by B-lymphocytes in response to pathogens. Each antibody molecule has four peptide chains.
Core concept
Structure: two small chains called light chains (L) and two longer chains called heavy chains (H); the antibody is represented as H2L2. The chains are held together by disulphide bonds. Types of antibodies produced in our body: IgA, IgM, IgE, IgG. Because these antibodies are found in the blood, the response is called the humoral immune response. IgA is abundant in colostrum; IgE is involved in allergies; IgG can cross the placenta from mother to foetus.
Go deeper
Each antibody's arms (variable regions) are shaped to bind one specific antigen — which is why acquired immunity is specific.
From Class 10
Antibodies are like Y-shaped locks that fit only one kind of key — the germ they are made against.
