Golgi Apparatus

கோல்கை உறுப்பு

NCERT Class 11 · Cell: The Unit of Life · 2 NEET questions

Do not confuse the Golgi apparatus with the Endoplasmic Reticulum. The ER synthesizes; the Golgi modifies and packages. If you miss this distinction, you lose four marks on a basic matching question.

The idea

The Golgi apparatus consists of stacked, flat, disc-shaped sacs called cisternae. These are arranged parallel to each other. It functions as the primary site for the packaging of materials to be delivered to intracellular targets or secreted outside the cell. It is also the site for the synthesis of glycoproteins and glycolipids.

Why it matters

It acts as the 'post office' of the cell, ensuring that proteins and lipids synthesized in the ER are modified, sorted, and dispatched to their correct destinations.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the specific role of Golgi in glycoprotein and glycolipid synthesis. Expect questions distinguishing the cis and trans faces of the cisternae. Memorize the term 'cisternae' as the structural unit. Do not mistake it for a site of protein synthesis; that is the ribosome's job.

Clinical significance

Defects in Golgi trafficking lead to I-cell disease, where lysosomal enzymes are not properly tagged and secreted. This results in the accumulation of undigested substrates within cells. Cellular function collapses when this packaging system fails.

Introduction

Golgi apparatus (Golgi body/complex) is a stack of membrane-bound, flattened sacs (cisternae) that modifies, packages, and routes proteins and lipids for secretion or organelle targeting.

Core concept

Structure: stacked cisternae (5–8), cis face (receiving, near ER), trans face (shipping, toward cell exterior). Process: proteins arrive at cis (via vesicles from ER) → modified (glycosylation, phosphorylation, sulfation) → packaged into vesicles at trans → sent to lysosomes, plasma membrane, or secreted.

Go deeper

Golgi modifies N-linked glycoproteins added in ER: trims and adds new sugar residues. Mannose-6-phosphate tag directs proteins to lysosomes — loss of this sorting mechanism causes lysosomal storage diseases.

From Class 10

Cells need to package and send proteins to different locations. The Golgi apparatus is the cell's packaging and shipping center.
