Cell Theory
செல் கொள்கை
Biology is not a collection of facts; it is a hierarchy of structural integrity. If you think a cell is just a 'building block,' you are failing the basics. Remember: every complex organism is merely a coordinated colony of individual units.
The idea
Matthias Schleiden (1838) observed plants, while Theodor Schwann (1839) studied animal cells. Together, they formulated Cell Theory: all living organisms are composed of cells and products of cells. Rudolf Virchow later added 'Omnis cellula-e cellula,' meaning all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Why it matters
It establishes the fundamental unity of life, explaining that despite diversity in form, all life shares a common cellular basis.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the chronology and the specific contributions of Schleiden, Schwann, and Virchow. Do not confuse the dates or the organism types they studied. Expect a 'Match the Following' or a statement-based question; memorize the exact phrasing of Virchow's contribution as it is a high-frequency target.
Clinical significance
Cancer is the clinical failure of cell theory's regulatory mechanisms. When cells ignore the 'pre-existing' lineage control and divide uncontrollably, the organism's structural integrity collapses. Unchecked mitosis is the direct antithesis of a healthy, regulated cellular life cycle.
Introduction
Cell theory, proposed by Schleiden and Schwann (1838-39) and later expanded by Virchow (1855), states that all living organisms are made of cells, and cells come from pre-existing cells.
Core concept
Three postulates: 1. All living organisms are composed of cells (Schleiden, Schwann). 2. The cell is the basic unit of life. 3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells (omnis cellula e cellula — Virchow, 1855). Exception: viruses are non-cellular but considered living by some — argued as exception to cell theory.
Go deeper
Before cell theory: spontaneous generation was believed (life arises from non-living matter). Cell theory revolutionized biology by establishing cellular continuity. Pasteur's experiments (1860s) disproved spontaneous generation, supporting Virchow's postulate.
From Class 10
You know all living things are made of cells. This fundamental understanding came from scientists observing cells and forming the cell theory.
