Biolistics Gene Gun
பயோலிஸ்டிக்ஸ் ஜீன் கன்
Stop confusing Biolistics with Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Agrobacterium is a natural genetic engineer; Biolistics is brute force. If the cell wall is the barrier, you don't negotiate—you bombard.
The idea
Biolistics, or the gene gun method, is specifically designed for plant cells. Cells are bombarded with high-velocity micro-particles of gold or tungsten coated with recombinant DNA. This physical method bypasses the rigid cell wall to deliver genetic material directly into the host cell. It is the preferred technique when biological vectors like Agrobacterium fail to infect the target species.
Why it matters
It provides a physical mechanism to bypass the rigid plant cell wall, which is otherwise difficult to penetrate for DNA.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the 'Gold or Tungsten' material and the 'Plant cells' target. Do not confuse this with microinjection, which is for animal cells. Remember: Biolistics = Physical method = Plant cells.
Clinical significance
This technology is foundational for creating Genetically Modified (GM) crops like Golden Rice, which addresses Vitamin A deficiency. Without such precise gene delivery, we cannot engineer crops to express essential nutrients or resist viral pathogens that threaten food security.
Introduction
Biolistics, or the gene gun method, introduces alien DNA into plant cells by bombarding them with tiny metal particles coated with DNA.
Core concept
Method (NCERT): plant cells are bombarded with high-velocity micro-particles of gold or tungsten coated with DNA. This method is suitable for plants. Other methods: micro-injection — directly injecting recombinant DNA into the nucleus of an animal cell; disarmed pathogen vectors (Agrobacterium, retroviruses); and, for bacteria, making cells competent with divalent cations (calcium) followed by heat shock.
Go deeper
Biolistics physically pushes DNA through the cell wall, which is why it works for plant cells that are hard to transform by other methods.
From Class 10
Scientists can literally 'shoot' DNA into plant cells using tiny gold bullets coated with genes.
