(Phylum and Division)
Phylum and Division
Introduction
When Linnaeus built his hierarchy, he had no rank between Kingdom and Class. It was Georges Cuvier who formalised the rank of Phylum in the 19th century, recognising that animals could be divided into major body plans — the vertebrate plan, the arthropod plan, the mollusc plan — that were distinct enough to warrant their own level. Division, the plant equivalent, followed the same logic. A phylum is, in essence, a blueprint for a body.
Core concept
Phylum (used in animals) and Division (used in plants) are taxonomic ranks above Class and below Kingdom. They group classes that share a fundamental body plan or organisational structure.Key phyla to know for NEET:Phylum Porifera — spongesPhylum Cnidaria — jellyfish, hydra, coralsPhylum Platyhelminthes — flatwormsPhylum Nematoda — roundwormsPhylum Annelida — earthworms, leechesPhylum Arthropoda — insects, crustaceans, arachnids (largest phylum)Phylum Mollusca — snails, octopus, clamsPhylum Echinodermata — starfish, sea urchinsPhylum Chordata — all vertebrates plus some invertebratesKey divisions for plants: Thallophyta, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms.
Go deeper
Phylum Arthropoda is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom — containing more species than all other phyla combined. This fact appears in NEET. Phylum Chordata includes not just vertebrates but also invertebrate chordates like Amphioxus (Branchiostoma) — organisms with a notochord but no vertebral column. NEET tests this distinction.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have encountered the classification of animals into groups — vertebrates and invertebrates, for instance. In Class 11, you learn the formal rank that sits above Class and below Kingdom: Phylum (for animals) and Division (for plants). These are the major branches of the tree of life within each kingdom.
