Nomenclature

Introduction

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. But a rose by another name in a scientific paper would cause complete chaos. The same plant is called rose in English, gulab in Hindi, roja in Tamil, and something different in every other language. Nomenclature solves this by giving every organism one name — Latin, universal, and accepted everywhere from Chennai to Chicago.

Core concept

Nomenclature is the branch of taxonomy concerned with assigning names to organisms according to established rules. It is one of the three pillars of taxonomy, alongside identification and classification.Scientific nomenclature follows internationally accepted codes:ICBN — International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (for plants)ICZN — International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (for animals)ICNB — International Code of Nomenclature of BacteriaThe practical system used is binomial nomenclature — two-word names in Latin, introduced by Linnaeus. The name must be universally accepted, stable, and unambiguous.

Go deeper

When two scientists independently name the same organism, the rule of priority applies — the name published first takes precedence. This is why some organisms have names that seem odd or inappropriate; the first published name stands, regardless of what later researchers prefer.NEET occasionally asks about the codes by name (ICBN, ICZN). Know which code governs which group. Animals → ICZN. Plants → ICBN. Bacteria → ICNB. Viruses are governed by ICTV (International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses).

From Class 10

In Class 10, you used scientific names without thinking about why they exist or how they are assigned. You wrote Homo sapiens because the textbook said so. In Class 11, you study nomenclature as a system — its rules, its purpose, and the international bodies that govern it.
