Introduction

Artificial hybridization is the controlled cross-pollination between two selected parent plants to combine desirable traits in offspring, involving emasculation (removal of stamens from female parent) and controlled pollination with desired pollen.

Core concept

Purpose: combine traits from two varieties/species → new cultivar with combined advantages (high yield + disease resistance, etc.). Steps: (1) Emasculation: remove immature anthers from bisexual female parent flower BEFORE they open → prevents self-pollination. (2) Bagging: cover emasculated flower with butter paper bag → prevent foreign pollen contamination. (3) Pollen collection: collect pollen from male parent at anthesis (flower opening). (4) Pollination: when female flower's stigma is receptive → remove bag → dust with collected pollen. (5) Re-bagging: cover again to prevent further contamination. (6) Seed harvest: collect hybrid seeds → grow → select superior plants. Not needed for unisexual (dioecious) plants or wind-pollinated crops (pollen can be dusted over at the right time).

Go deeper

Emasculation timing: must be done BEFORE anthers dehisce (open). Done when flower buds are young (anthers still enclosed). If even a few pollen grains escape → self-pollination possible → hybrid purity compromised. For wind-pollinated plants (maize): detassel male parent (remove tassels = staminate inflorescence) instead of emasculating individual flowers.

From Class 10

Plant breeders create new varieties by crossing two different plants with desirable traits. This controlled cross-pollination is artificial hybridization.
