Prothallus
Introduction
Look closely at the underside of a fern frond and you will find spore-bearing structures, but the fern's sexual reproduction happens at a completely different, tiny stage called the prothallus. This small, heart-shaped structure is the gametophyte of pteridophytes, and it lives a fully independent life in the soil. Understanding the prothallus is key to understanding why pteridophytes still need water for reproduction despite being more advanced than bryophytes.
Core concept
The prothallus is the free-living, independent, haploid (n) gametophyte of pteridophytes such as ferns (Dryopteris), Selaginella, and Equisetum. It is heart-shaped (cordate), green, photosynthetic, and typically 1–2 cm in size. The prothallus bears both male sex organs (antheridia) and female sex organs (archegonia) on its lower surface, making most prothalli bisexual (monoecious). Antheridia produce flagellated (motile) antherozoids that must swim through a film of water to reach the archegonia — this is why pteridophytes require moisture for fertilisation. After fertilisation, the diploid zygote (2n) develops into the sporophyte (the large fern plant), which is the dominant generation. The prothallus attaches to soil via unicellular rhizoids for anchorage and absorption.
Go deeper
In heterosporous pteridophytes like Selaginella, there are two types of prothalli: a small male prothallus developing from the microspore and a larger female prothallus developing from the megaspore. This heterospory is considered a critical evolutionary step toward the seed habit, because the female prothallus in Selaginella is retained within the megaspore wall — a condition closely similar to the embryo sac inside an ovule in flowering plants.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you encountered ferns as seedless vascular plants that reproduce via spores. The prothallus is the hidden half of that story — the small, independent plant that actually produces the sex cells before a new fern can grow.
