Natural Classification System
Introduction
Before DNA sequencing existed, botanists classified plants by carefully observing every feature they could — flower structure, leaf shape, fruit type, stem anatomy. This holistic approach became the foundation of the Natural Classification System, which remains the basis of most standard botanical texts used in India today. Its most famous expression is the monumental work Genera Plantarum by Bentham and Hooker.
Core concept
The Natural Classification System groups organisms based on overall similarity across many characters — morphological, anatomical, reproductive, and physiological — rather than any single feature. It attempts to reflect natural relationships, though without explicit reference to evolutionary ancestry. The most significant natural system in botany is that of Bentham and Hooker (1862–1883), documented in their three-volume Genera Plantarum, which classified flowering plants into 202 orders (families) and remains the basis of many Indian herbaria. Plants are arranged in a sequence from structurally simpler to more complex: starting with Ranales (considered primitive) and ending with Microspermae (orchids, considered advanced). This system used actual preserved specimens, making it highly practical and the standard for Indian botanical surveys.
Go deeper
Bentham and Hooker's system is not phylogenetic — they worked before Darwin's evolutionary framework was widely accepted in taxonomy. However, their system has practical durability because it is based on exhaustive character analysis of real specimens. The system places Gymnosperms between Dicots and Monocots — an arrangement now known to be taxonomically inaccurate but retained in Indian herbaria for practical reasons.
