Gymnosperm Ovules
Introduction
A pine cone is not a fruit. It is a collection of open scales, each bearing a naked seed on its upper surface. There is no wall enclosing it, no ovary that becomes a fruit. The seed sits exposed — naked — which is exactly what gymnosperm means in Greek: gymnos (naked) + sperma (seed). For 200 million years before flowering plants appeared, gymnosperms were the dominant seed plants on Earth.
Core concept
Gymnosperms: seed plants in which ovules (and seeds) are not enclosed within an ovary — they are naked, borne directly on the surface of megasporophylls.Key features of gymnosperm ovules:Ovule not enclosed in ovary (naked = gymnosperm; enclosed = angiosperm)Ovule contains the megasporangium (nucellus) surrounded by integumentsAfter fertilisation, ovule develops into a seedSeeds borne on cone scalesPollination by wind (anemophily); pollen reaches ovule directly through micropyleExamples: Cycas, Pinus, Cedrus, Sequoia, Ginkgo, Gnetum
Go deeper
In Pinus, time between pollination and fertilisation can be up to a year. Pollen grains are winged (bisaccate) to aid wind dispersal. Endosperm in gymnosperms forms before fertilisation — it is female gametophyte tissue, not a product of double fertilisation. NEET tests this: gymnosperms do NOT have double fertilisation.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you learned that seeds in flowering plants are enclosed in fruits. In Class 11, you discover a whole group of seed plants where seeds are not enclosed — they are naked, borne directly on cone scales. These are gymnosperms, and understanding their naked ovules is central to understanding plant evolution.
