Bryophytes Characteristics
Introduction
About 470 million years ago, the first plants stepped out of the water. They were small, low-growing, and entirely dependent on a film of moisture to reproduce — because their sperm still needed to swim to the egg. Those pioneers were the ancestors of modern bryophytes. Mosses and liverworts have not changed much since. They are a living record of that first colonisation.
Core concept
Bryophytes: simplest land plants — amphibians of the plant kingdom. Division Bryophyta.Key characteristics:No vascular tissue (no xylem or phloem)No true roots — have rhizoids (anchorage and absorption)No true leaves or stems — body is a thallus (liverworts) or stem-like and leaf-like (mosses)Dominant generation: gametophyte (haploid, n) — the green, leafy plant you seeSporophyte (diploid, 2n) is dependent on gametophyte for nutritionRequire water for sexual reproduction — sperm (antherozoids) swim to eggThree classes: Liverworts (Marchantia), Hornworts (Anthoceros), Mosses (Funaria, Polytrichum, Sphagnum)
Go deeper
Sphagnum (peat moss) forms peat bogs and is used as packing material for plants (retains water). Marchantia reproduces vegetatively by gemmae — small multicellular bodies produced in gemma cups on the thallus surface. Both are NEET-tested applied facts.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have seen mosses growing on damp walls and learned they were simple land plants. In Class 11, you study bryophytes as a formal division — the first plants to colonise land, defined by lack of vascular tissue and dependence on water for sexual reproduction.
