Plant Growth

Introduction

Plant growth is the irreversible increase in size and mass of a plant due to cell division (in meristems), cell enlargement (elongation), and differentiation, resulting in new organs and increased biomass.

Core concept

Requirements: water (cell turgor for elongation), oxygen (aerobic respiration for energy), nutrients (minerals for enzyme function and structural components), light (for photosynthesis = carbon source). Types: Primary growth — increase in length (apical meristems). Secondary growth — increase in girth (lateral meristems: vascular cambium + cork cambium). Only dicots and gymnosperms show significant secondary growth. Monocots lack vascular cambium. Growth is irreversible (unlike animal reversible body size changes).

Go deeper

Cell elongation: the primary mechanism of plant growth after cell division. Cells can enlarge 10-100× in volume. Driven by: osmotic water uptake → turgor pressure → cell wall stretching. Auxin loosens cell wall (acid growth hypothesis) → more expansion possible → more water uptake → further expansion.

From Class 10

Plants grow taller, wider, and produce new leaves and branches over their lifetime. This growth is driven by cell division and expansion in specific regions called meristems.
