Arithmetic Growth

Introduction

Arithmetic growth is a growth pattern where a constant amount is added in each time period, resulting in a linear (straight-line) graph. It represents growth where one daughter cell continues to divide while the other differentiates.

Core concept

Characteristics: Growth increment is constant. Total growth increases linearly with time. Graph = straight line (linear). Equation: L_t = L_0 + r×t where L_t = length at time t, L_0 = initial length, r = growth rate constant (constant value). Biological example: elongation of a root — the root apical meristem continuously adds cells at a constant rate, but most daughter cells differentiate (stop dividing) → one cell in mitosis while the rest elongate at constant rate.

Go deeper

Why arithmetic growth in roots? Meristematic zone adds cells at the root tip. Each mitotic division: one cell remains meristematic (continues dividing), one elongates and differentiates. The meristem itself doesn't grow exponentially — cell number in meristem stays roughly constant. Net result: linear addition of cells to elongation zone.

From Class 10

Some things grow by adding a constant amount each time — like saving the same amount of money every month. This steady linear growth is called arithmetic growth.
