RuBisCO Enzyme
Introduction
RuBisCO (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) is the enzyme responsible for CO₂ fixation in the Calvin cycle, catalyzing the carboxylation of RuBP (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate).
Core concept
Reaction: RuBP (5C) + CO₂ → 2 molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate (3C each). RuBisCO has two activities: carboxylase (reacts with CO₂ → useful, makes sugar) and oxygenase (reacts with O₂ → photorespiration, wasteful). Location: stroma of chloroplast. Structure: large (L) and small (S) subunits — L₈S₈ in plants (8 large + 8 small). Most abundant protein on Earth (~0.7 billion tonnes).
Go deeper
RuBisCO is slow (3-10 catalytic cycles per second vs. typical enzymes 1000/sec) and relatively non-specific (reacts with O₂). To compensate for slowness, cells have enormous amounts of RuBisCO — up to 50% of leaf protein is RuBisCO. This makes it the most abundant protein on Earth.
From Class 10
CO₂ fixation in photosynthesis is catalyzed by a specific enzyme. RuBisCO is the most abundant enzyme on Earth and the key catalyst for carbon fixation.
