Population Density

Introduction

Population density (N) is the number of individuals of a species per unit area or volume at a given time. It need not always be measured in numbers.

Core concept

Measures (NCERT): total number is the most appropriate measure in many cases, but sometimes it is meaningless or difficult to determine — e.g. in an area with 200 Parthenium plants and a single huge banyan tree, stating that the banyan's population density is low relative to Parthenium underestimates its role; per cent cover or biomass is a more meaningful measure there. For ecological investigations, relative densities often serve the purpose — e.g. number of fish caught per trap. Density can also be estimated indirectly, without counting or seeing individuals: tiger census in national parks and tiger reserves is often based on pug marks and faecal pellets. Density changes by four processes: natality, mortality, immigration and emigration.

Go deeper

Choosing the right measure (count, cover, biomass) depends on the size of organisms and the question being asked.

From Class 10

Counting every ant on a field is impossible, so ecologists use smart estimates — like counting tiger footprints instead of tigers.
