Parasitism

Introduction

Parasitism is an interaction in which one species (the parasite) benefits by depending on another (the host) for food and shelter, and the host is harmed (+, −).

Core concept

Adaptations of parasites (NCERT): loss of unnecessary sense organs, presence of adhesive organs or suckers to cling on to the host, loss of digestive system and high reproductive capacity. Life cycles are often complex, involving one or two intermediate hosts or vectors to facilitate parasitisation of the primary host — e.g. the human liver fluke depends on two intermediate hosts (a snail and a fish). Effects on the host: parasites may reduce survival, growth and reproduction of the host and reduce its population density; they might render the host more vulnerable to predation by making it physically weak. Ectoparasites feed on the external surface of the host — lice on humans, ticks on dogs, copepods on marine fish; Cuscuta, a parasitic plant without chlorophyll and leaves, commonly found on hedge plants, derives nutrition from the host plant. Endoparasites live inside the host body at different sites (liver, kidney, lungs, RBCs). Brood parasitism in birds: the cuckoo (koel) lays eggs in the nest of the crow.

Go deeper

Majority of parasites harm the host but many are host-specific (they can parasitise only a single species of host), so hosts and parasites tend to co-evolve.

From Class 10

A tick sucking a dog's blood gets food and the dog is harmed — that is parasitism.
