Bioactive Molecules
இந்த அட்டவணையை மனப்பாடம் செய்யுங்கள்: Trichoderma (Cyclosporin A), Monascus (Statins), மற்றும் Streptococcus (Streptokinase).
Introduction
Microbes are used to make many bioactive molecules for industry and medicine — enzymes, organic acids, immunosuppressants and cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Core concept
Industrial products (NCERT): Organic acids — Aspergillus niger (fungus) → citric acid; Acetobacter aceti (bacterium) → acetic acid; Clostridium butylicum (bacterium) → butyric acid; Lactobacillus (bacterium) → lactic acid. Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae → commercial ethanol. Enzymes — lipases are used in detergent formulations to remove oily stains from laundry; pectinases and proteases make bottled fruit juices clearer. Streptokinase — produced by Streptococcus and modified by genetic engineering — is used as a 'clot buster' for removing clots from blood vessels of patients who have had myocardial infarction (heart attack). Cyclosporin A — produced by the fungus Trichoderma polysporum — is an immunosuppressive agent used in organ-transplant patients. Statins — produced by the yeast Monascus purpureus — lower blood cholesterol by competitively inhibiting the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis.
Go deeper
Microbes are grown on an industrial scale in very large vessels called fermentors. Beverages: wine and beer are produced without distillation; whisky, brandy and rum are produced by distillation of the fermented broth.
From Class 10
Medicines like some heart-attack drugs and transplant drugs are made by microbes grown in big tanks in factories.
