Sertoli Cells
Introduction
Sertoli cells are large, columnar cells lining the seminiferous tubules that support and nourish developing spermatogenic cells, form the blood-testis barrier, and produce hormones (inhibin, ABP, AMH) in response to FSH.
Core concept
Location: seminiferous tubule epithelium (somatic cells, not germline). Stimulation: FSH from anterior pituitary. Functions: (1) Structural support: developing spermatogenic cells (from base to lumen) nest within Sertoli cell cytoplasm. (2) Nourishment: provide nutrients, growth factors, lactate to developing sperm. (3) Blood-testis barrier (BTB): tight junctions between adjacent Sertoli cells → separate basal (spermatogonia) from adluminal compartment (spermatocytes, spermatids) → immunological protection. (4) Phagocytosis: engulf residual bodies and degenerated germ cells. (5) Hormone production: ABP (concentrates testosterone for spermatogenesis), inhibin (inhibits FSH), AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone — causes regression of Müllerian ducts in male fetus). (6) Spermiation: release mature spermatids into lumen.
Go deeper
AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone): produced by fetal Sertoli cells → causes regression of Müllerian ducts (which would become uterus/fallopian tubes in females). Without AMH → Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome (male with uterus/tubes). AMH test used clinically to assess ovarian reserve in females (produced by granulosa cells in females) and to diagnose disorders of sex development.
From Class 10
Developing sperm cells need support and nourishment as they mature inside the seminiferous tubules. Sertoli cells provide this support.
