Gametogenesis

Introduction

Gametogenesis is the process of formation of haploid gametes (sperm and eggs) from diploid precursor cells through meiosis and differentiation, occurring in the gonads (testes and ovaries), regulated by gonadotropins (FSH and LH).

Core concept

Male gametogenesis (spermatogenesis): spermatogonia (2n) → primary spermatocyte (2n) → meiosis I → 2 secondary spermatocytes (n) → meiosis II → 4 spermatids (n) → spermiogenesis → 4 spermatozoa. Female gametogenesis (oogenesis): oogonium (2n) → primary oocyte (2n, arrested prophase I) → secondary oocyte (n, arrested metaphase II) → ovum (n) + polar bodies. Common features: both involve meiosis (halving chromosome number), both require FSH for gamete maturation, both produce haploid gametes for fertilization. Differences: timing, products, cell divisions (symmetric vs asymmetric), duration.

Go deeper

Meiosis in gametogenesis creates genetic diversity through: (1) Independent assortment of chromosomes (2²³ = ~8 million combinations). (2) Crossing over in prophase I (generates new allele combinations). Together, each gamete is genetically unique. Fertilization combines two unique gametes → virtually infinite genetic variation.

From Class 10

Gametogenesis is the production of sex cells (gametes) — sperm in males and eggs in females — through meiosis.
