Lymphoid Organs
Introduction
Lymphoid organs are the organs where lymphocytes originate, mature and multiply. They are primary or secondary.
Core concept
Primary lymphoid organs: bone marrow and thymus — immature lymphocytes differentiate into antigen-sensitive lymphocytes. Bone marrow is the main lymphoid organ where all blood cells, including lymphocytes, are produced. The thymus is a lobed organ near the heart, beneath the breastbone; it is quite large at birth but keeps reducing in size with age, becoming very small by puberty; bone marrow and thymus provide the micro-environment for development and maturation of T-lymphocytes. Secondary lymphoid organs: spleen, lymph nodes, tonsils, Peyer's patches of the small intestine and appendix — lymphocytes interact with antigens here and proliferate to become effector cells. The spleen is a large bean-shaped organ containing mainly lymphocytes and phagocytes; it filters blood and is a reservoir of erythrocytes. Lymph nodes trap micro-organisms or antigens from lymph and tissue fluid. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lines the respiratory, digestive and urogenital tracts and constitutes about 50 per cent of the lymphoid tissue in the human body.
Go deeper
Primary organs produce and train lymphocytes; secondary organs are where they meet antigens and respond.

Your tonsils and the swollen 'glands' in your neck during an infection are lymphoid organs fighting germs.
