Contact Inhibition
Introduction
Contact inhibition is the property by which contact with other cells inhibits uncontrolled growth of normal cells.
Core concept
In our body, cell growth and differentiation are highly controlled. Normal cells, on touching neighbouring cells, stop dividing. Cancer cells appear to have lost this property; as a result, they continue to divide, giving rise to masses of cells called tumours. Tumours are of two types: benign — remain confined to their original location, do not spread and cause little damage; malignant — masses of proliferating cells called neoplastic or tumour cells that grow very rapidly, invade and damage surrounding normal tissues, and spread to distant sites (metastasis).
Go deeper
Loss of contact inhibition is one of the earliest changes seen when normal cells become cancerous in cell culture.
From Class 10
Healthy cells stop dividing when they are crowded, like people stopping when a room is full. Cancer cells keep dividing anyway.
