Active and Passive Immunity
Introduction
Active immunity develops when the body makes its own antibodies after exposure to antigens; passive immunity is when ready-made antibodies are given directly.
Core concept
Active immunity: produced in response to antigens — living or dead microbes or other proteins — through natural infection or deliberate vaccination. It is slow and takes time to give its full effect, but it lasts long. Passive immunity: ready-made antibodies are given directly to protect the body against foreign agents; it is quick. Examples: yellowish fluid colostrum, secreted by the mother during the initial days of lactation, has abundant IgA antibodies to protect the infant; the foetus receives antibodies from the mother through the placenta during pregnancy. In quick-response cases (e.g. tetanus, snakebite), preformed antibodies or antitoxin are injected — passive immunisation. Vaccination works on the property of memory: vaccines (inactivated/weakened pathogens or antigenic proteins) generate memory B and T cells.
Go deeper
Recombinant DNA technology allows antigenic polypeptides of pathogens to be made in bacteria or yeast for vaccines (e.g. hepatitis B vaccine produced from yeast).
From Class 10
Getting a vaccine teaches your body to make its own antibodies (active). Getting antibodies from your mother's milk is borrowed protection (passive).
