Homologous Organs

Introduction

Homologous organs have the same basic structure and origin but perform different functions. They are evidence of divergent evolution — the same structure adapted for different needs.

Core concept

Examples (NCERT): forelimbs of whales, bats, cheetah and humans — same bones (humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges) used for swimming, flying, running and grasping; in plants, the thorn of Bougainvillea and the tendril of Cucurbita (both modified stems); vertebrate hearts and brains. Homology indicates common ancestry. Divergent evolution: the same structure develops along different directions due to adaptation to different needs.

Go deeper

Molecular homology — similarities in proteins and genes across organisms — is another line of evidence for common ancestry.

From Class 10

Your arm, a bat's wing and a whale's flipper look different but have the same bones inside — that shared plan is homology.
