Kinetochore

Introduction

The kinetochore is a protein complex assembled on the centromere of each chromosome that serves as the attachment site for spindle microtubules during cell division.

Core concept

Location: on the centromere of each chromatid. Each chromosome has two kinetochores (one per sister chromatid) facing opposite poles. Function: (1) captures spindle microtubules (kinetochore microtubules), (2) generates force for chromosome movement, (3) activates spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) if unattached. Sister kinetochores attach to microtubules from OPPOSITE poles (amphitelic attachment).

Go deeper

Kinetochore generates force through two mechanisms: (1) depolymerization of microtubules at kinetochore end ('Pac-Man' model), (2) motor proteins (dynein, CENP-E) walking along microtubules. Proper attachment = amphitelic = one kinetochore to each pole = equal segregation.

From Class 10

During cell division, spindle fibers pull chromosomes to opposite ends of the cell. The kinetochore is the specialized protein structure where spindle fibers attach to chromosomes.
