Interphase
Introduction
Interphase is the period of the cell cycle between two successive cell divisions, consisting of G1, S, and G2 phases. It is NOT a resting phase — it is the most metabolically active stage.
Core concept
G1 phase (Gap 1 / First growth phase): cell grows, synthesizes proteins and organelles, prepares for DNA replication. Duration varies most (hours to years in non-dividing cells). G1 checkpoint: decides whether to proceed to S phase. S phase: DNA replication occurs — each chromosome duplicated into two sister chromatids. G2 phase (Gap 2): cell grows more, repairs any DNA replication errors, synthesizes proteins for mitosis (tubulin for spindle). G2 checkpoint: checks for DNA damage.
Go deeper
The G1 checkpoint (restriction point in animals) is the key commitment point — once passed, the cell is committed to completing the cell cycle. Growth factors and mitogens signal through this checkpoint. Tumor suppressors (Rb, p53) block progression; cyclins/CDKs promote it.
From Class 10
Before a cell divides, it must prepare — growing, copying its DNA, and making sure everything is ready. This preparation period is interphase.
