Interkinesis
Introduction
Interkinesis is the brief interphase-like period between meiosis I and meiosis II. Critically, NO DNA replication occurs during interkinesis — it distinguishes meiosis from two successive mitotic divisions.
Core concept
Duration: very brief, may be barely distinguishable in some species. Events: cells remain haploid (n chromosomes, each consisting of 2 sister chromatids). Nuclear envelope may reform partially. Chromosomes may partially decondense. NO S phase = NO DNA replication. Cells then proceed directly into Meiosis II prophase. In some organisms (e.g., some plants), interkinesis is completely absent.
Go deeper
Why no DNA replication in interkinesis? Meiosis II must separate sister chromatids (like mitosis), not homologs. If DNA replicated again, the cell would have 4 copies of each chromosome — wrong. The lack of S phase in interkinesis is ESSENTIAL for meiosis to produce haploid cells.
From Class 10
Between meiosis I and meiosis II, there is a brief pause. This interval is called interkinesis.
