Crossing Over
Introduction
Crossing over is the reciprocal exchange of segments between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis, creating new combinations of alleles.
Core concept
Stage: Prophase I — specifically pachytene stage. Physical location: chiasmata (singular: chiasma) — points where two non-sister chromatids cross over and exchange segments. Sequence: homologous chromosomes pair (synapsis) → synaptonemal complex forms → crossing over occurs at chiasmata → bivalents held together until anaphase I by chiasmata. Result: recombinant chromatids with new allele combinations on each chromosome.
Go deeper
Chiasmata serve a structural function: they hold bivalents (paired homologs) together until anaphase I when the spindle pulls them apart. Without chiasmata, chromosomes would separate prematurely. The number of chiasmata per bivalent = measure of crossing over frequency = measure of gene-gene distance.
From Class 10
During meiosis, homologous chromosomes can exchange segments. This exchange is called crossing over — the key source of genetic recombination.
