Chiasmata

Introduction

Chiasmata (singular: chiasma) are X-shaped structures visible under the microscope during diplotene of prophase I, representing the physical points where crossing over occurred between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes.

Core concept

Formation: crossing over occurs during pachytene (when chromosomes are fully synapsed). Chiasmata become visible in diplotene when synaptonemal complex dissolves and homologs slightly separate. Physical role: hold bivalents together until anaphase I — they are the structural links that keep paired homologs connected. Number of chiasmata: at least one per bivalent (obligate chiasma); more = more crossing over = more recombination.

Go deeper

Terminalization of chiasmata: during diakinesis and early metaphase I, chiasmata appear to 'slide' toward chromosome ends. This is not actual movement — the chromosomes condense while chiasmata remain fixed, giving the appearance of movement toward telomeres.

From Class 10

During meiosis, homologous chromosomes exchange segments. The X-shaped cross structures visible under the microscope at these exchange points are called chiasmata.
