Respiratory Rhythm Centre

Introduction

The respiratory rhythm centre (DRG — dorsal respiratory group) in the medulla oblongata is the primary neural control centre that generates the basic rhythm of breathing (approximately 15 breaths/minute).

Core concept

Primary centre: Medulla oblongata — respiratory rhythm centre / dorsal respiratory group (DRG). Generates basic rhythmic breathing pattern. Inspiration and expiration alternating automatically. Pontine centres: Pneumotaxic centre (upper pons) — modifies medullary rhythm, limits inspiration. Apneustic centre (lower pons) — promotes prolonged inspiration (apneusis) — normally inhibited by pneumotaxic centre. Chemoreceptors: Central chemoreceptors (medulla) — detect CO₂ and H⁺ in CSF → primary stimulus for breathing. Peripheral chemoreceptors (carotid and aortic bodies) — detect pO₂, pCO₂, H⁺ in blood.

Go deeper

CO₂ is the primary driver of breathing (not O₂): CO₂ crosses blood-brain barrier → CO₂ + H₂O → H₂CO₃ → H⁺ → detected by central chemoreceptors → stimulates more breathing. O₂ is monitored by peripheral chemoreceptors (carotid bodies) but only stimulates breathing when pO₂ falls very low (<60 mmHg — Hb is still 90% saturated at 60 mmHg).

From Class 10

Breathing continues automatically even when you're asleep or not thinking about it. A specific brain region controls this automatic rhythm.
