Conducting and Exchange Parts
Introduction
The respiratory system is divided into a conducting zone (anatomical dead space — moves air but no gas exchange) and a respiratory zone (exchange zone — where actual gas exchange between air and blood occurs).
Core concept
Conducting zone (anatomical dead space): Nose → Nasopharynx → Larynx → Trachea → Primary bronchi → Secondary bronchi → Tertiary bronchi → Bronchioles → Terminal bronchioles. ~150 mL volume. No gas exchange (walls too thick, no alveoli). Warms, humidifies, filters air. Respiratory zone: Respiratory bronchioles (have some alveoli on walls) → Alveolar ducts → Alveolar sacs → Alveoli. Where O₂ and CO₂ actually cross between air and blood. ~3 litres volume.
Go deeper
Anatomical dead space importance: each breath has TV = 500 mL but 150 mL stays in conducting zone → only 350 mL reaches alveoli. Alveolar ventilation = (TV - dead space) × respiratory rate = 350 × 15 = 5250 mL/min. This is what matters for gas exchange, not total ventilation (500 × 15 = 7500 mL/min).
From Class 10
The respiratory system has two distinct functional regions — one that just moves air to the right place, and one where the actual gas exchange happens.
