Double Circulation
Introduction
Double circulation is the circulatory pattern in which blood passes through the heart twice per complete circuit — once through pulmonary circulation (heart → lungs → heart) and once through systemic circulation (heart → body → heart) — keeping oxygenated and deoxygenated blood completely separate.
Core concept
Pulmonary circulation: right ventricle → pulmonary artery → lungs (gas exchange) → pulmonary veins → left atrium. Low pressure, short circuit. Systemic circulation: left ventricle → aorta → body tissues → superior/inferior vena cava → right atrium. High pressure, long circuit. Advantage: complete separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood → efficient O₂ delivery to tissues. Compare with single circulation (fish): heart → gills → body → heart (one loop, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mix slightly).
Go deeper
Why do we need double circulation? Lung capillaries have low pressure (to prevent pulmonary edema — fluid in alveoli). Body tissues need high pressure (to push blood to fingertips, brain). One heart can't run both circuits at different pressures → need two pumps in one organ. Left ventricle (systemic) has thicker walls than right (pulmonary) for this reason.
From Class 10
In humans, blood passes through the heart twice for every complete circuit of the body — once for the lungs and once for the body. This is called double circulation.
