Biomacromolecules

Introduction

Biomacromolecules are high molecular weight polymers found in living systems — polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, and (functionally) lipids. They form the structural and functional basis of all cells.

Core concept

Polysaccharides: polymers of monosaccharides (cellulose, starch, glycogen, chitin). Proteins: polymers of amino acids, diverse roles. Nucleic acids: polymers of nucleotides (DNA, RNA). Lipids: not true polymers but form large aggregates (membranes, micelles) — included as macromolecules. All polymers are built by condensation reactions (water released) and broken by hydrolysis (water added).

Go deeper

Lipids are classified with biomacromolecules functionally despite not being true polymers because they form large, organized structures (lipid bilayer) essential to cell architecture. Their molecular weight is lower (~800 Da) compared to proteins or nucleic acids (millions of Da).

From Class 10

Large biological molecules like starch, DNA, and proteins are polymers made of repeating units. These are biomacromolecules.
