Sacred Groves

Introduction

Sacred groves are tracts of forest set aside by local communities, where all the trees and wildlife within are venerated and given total protection.

Core concept

India has a history of religious and cultural traditions that emphasised protection of nature. In many cultures, tracts of forest were set aside as sacred groves. Such sacred groves are found in Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, Western Ghat regions of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and the Sarguja, Chanda and Bastar areas of Madhya Pradesh. In Meghalaya, the sacred groves are the last refuges for a large number of rare and threatened plants.

Go deeper

Sacred groves show that community traditions can be powerful tools for in situ conservation.

From Class 10

Some villages protect small forests near temples and never cut trees there — these are sacred groves, and they protect rare plants and animals.
