In Situ Conservation
Introduction
In situ (on site) conservation protects threatened species in their natural habitat, so that the entire ecosystem is protected.
Core concept
Approaches (NCERT): biodiversity hotspots; protected areas — India now has 14 biosphere reserves, 90 national parks and 448 wildlife sanctuaries; sacred groves — tracts of forest set aside, where all the trees and wildlife within are venerated and given total protection (e.g. Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, Western Ghat regions of Karnataka and Maharashtra, Sarguja, Chanda and Bastar areas of Madhya Pradesh); in Meghalaya, sacred groves are the last refuges for a large number of rare and threatened plants. A biosphere reserve has a core zone (legally protected, no human activity allowed), a buffer zone (limited human activity, such as research and education) and a transition zone (human settlements, agriculture). The Dachigam National Park in Jammu and Kashmir is home to the hangul (Kashmir stag).
Go deeper
In situ conservation keeps species in their natural ecological relationships and lets evolution continue; it is preferred over ex situ methods whenever possible.
From Class 10
Protecting animals and plants where they naturally live — in national parks and sanctuaries — is in situ conservation.
