Phylum Porifera
Introduction
Sponges look nothing like animals — they have no head, no organs, no muscles, and no nervous system. Yet Phylum Porifera is firmly in the animal kingdom. Their secret is a remarkable water canal system that pulls food particles directly from the ocean around them. Everything about a sponge is built around that one function: making water flow through the body.
Core concept
Phylum Porifera (meaning 'pore-bearing') contains the sponges. Key features: (1) cellular level of organisation — cells are not organised into tissues; (2) diploblastic — two germ layers (outer pinacoderm, inner choanoderm); (3) body perforated by pores called ostia (inlet) and a large opening called the osculum (outlet); (4) internal canal system lined by choanocytes (collar cells) that drive water flow and trap food; (5) spicules (of calcium carbonate or silica) or spongin fibres provide the skeleton; (6) hermaphrodites; (7) reproduce sexually and asexually (by gemmules — internal buds for unfavourable conditions). Examples: Sycon (calcareous), Spongilla (freshwater), Euspongia (bath sponge).
Go deeper
Totipotency is a key property of sponge cells — if a sponge is passed through a fine sieve, the dissociated cells can reaggregate and form a new sponge. This is the most extreme demonstration of cellular totipotency in animals. Gemmules in freshwater sponges like Spongilla are resistant to desiccation and cold, allowing survival through harsh conditions.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have learned that sponges are the simplest animals. At NEET level, you need to know the canal system, cell types, and key features that make Porifera unique — and why they sit at the base of the animal kingdom.
