Phylum Platyhelminthes
Introduction
Flatworms are nature's first experiment with bilateral symmetry and a defined head end. Phylum Platyhelminthes — the flatworms — are dorsoventrally flattened, soft-bodied animals that include both free-living predators in ponds and some of the most medically important parasites known to humans. Their flat shape is not accidental: it is their solution to having no circulatory or respiratory system.
Core concept
Phylum Platyhelminthes (meaning 'flat worms') features: (1) triploblastic, acoelomate; (2) bilaterally symmetrical; (3) body dorsoventrally flattened; (4) no circulatory or respiratory system — gas exchange by diffusion through flat body; (5) excretion by flame cells (protonephridia); (6) hermaphrodites; (7) some are free-living, most are parasitic. Three classes: Turbellaria — free-living (e.g. Planaria — famous for regeneration); Trematoda — flukes, parasitic (e.g. Fasciola — liver fluke); Cestoda — tapeworms, parasitic (e.g. Taenia — pork/beef tapeworm). Parasitic forms have hooks and suckers for attachment and lack a digestive system — they absorb nutrients directly.
Go deeper
Planaria is a classic model organism for studying regeneration — a single piece can regenerate into a complete organism. Tapeworms (Taenia solium from pork, Taenia saginata from beef) cause cysticercosis in humans when larvae encyst in muscle tissue. The flame cell system is the earliest example of an excretory organ in the animal kingdom.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have encountered tapeworms and liver flukes as parasitic flatworms. Phylum Platyhelminthes contains these and more — at NEET level, know the key structural features and the major classes with their examples.
