Phylum Hemichordata
Introduction
Hidden in the ocean floor lives a worm-like animal that confused biologists for over a century. Phylum Hemichordata ('half-chord') was once thought to be related to chordates because of a structure in its head called a stomochord. We now know the stomochord is not a true notochord — but hemichordates are still important as deuterostomes, making them an evolutionary link between echinoderms and chordates.
Core concept
Phylum Hemichordata features: (1) marine, burrowing worm-like animals; (2) triploblastic, coelomate; (3) bilaterally symmetrical; (4) body divided into three parts: proboscis (prosoma), collar (mesosoma), and trunk (metasoma) — called a trimeric body plan; (5) possess a stomochord — a hollow outgrowth of the pharynx, NOT a true notochord; (6) pharyngeal gill slits present — homologous to those in chordates; (7) open circulatory system; (8) oviparous. Examples: Balanoglossus (acorn worm), Saccoglossus. Balanoglossus is the classic NEET example — it was historically placed with chordates due to the stomochord, then moved out.
Go deeper
Balanoglossus is a deuterostome — like echinoderms and chordates — supporting an evolutionary link. The pharyngeal gill slits in hemichordates are considered homologous to chordate gill slits, suggesting a common ancestor. The stomochord and gill slits together make hemichordates a crucial group for understanding how chordate features may have evolved.
From Class 10
Phylum Hemichordata is unlikely to have appeared in Class 10. It is a small phylum of marine worm-like animals. At NEET level, it is important because it shows a structure called the stomochord — once thought to be a notochord — and links invertebrates to chordates.
