Levels of Organisation
Introduction
Complexity in the animal kingdom is not random — it follows a progression from isolated cells to coordinated systems. Levels of organisation is the framework that describes how animal body parts are integrated, and it is one of the first classification axes applied in any NEET animal kingdom question. Five levels, five phyla groups — each one building on the last.
Core concept
Animals are organised at five levels: (1) Protoplasmic / Cellular level — cell organelles carry out life functions (e.g. Porifera — cells are specialised but not organised into tissues; this is sometimes called 'cellular aggregate' level); (2) Tissue level — similar cells grouped to perform a function (e.g. Coelenterata/Cnidaria); (3) Organ level — tissues combine to form organs (e.g. Platyhelminthes); (4) Organ system level — organs work together as a system: further divided into: Incomplete digestive system — single opening (e.g. Platyhelminthes, Coelenterata); Complete digestive system — separate mouth and anus (e.g. Aschelminthes onwards). All higher phyla from Aschelminthes to Chordata show organ system level of organisation.
Go deeper
The progression from cellular to organ system level parallels increasing body complexity and ecological role diversity. Sponges (Porifera) are often cited as the most primitive — their cells show division of labour but no tissue-level coordination. The distinction between incomplete (one opening) and complete (two openings) digestive systems reflects increasing gut specialisation that allows different regions to perform different digestive functions.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you learned that complex organisms have organs and organ systems. Levels of organisation is a classification axis in the animal kingdom — at NEET level, you need to know all five levels with their phyla.
