Cnidarian Body Forms
Introduction
Jellyfish and sea anemones look nothing alike — one drifts freely, the other sits anchored to a rock. Yet both belong to Phylum Cnidaria, and both share a feature found in no other animal: stinging cells called cnidoblasts. The polyp-medusa alternation is one of the most elegant life cycles in the animal kingdom, and NEET tests it with precision.
Core concept
Phylum Cnidaria (formerly Coelenterata) features: (1) tissue level of organisation; (2) diploblastic — two germ layers (ectoderm and endoderm) with a non-cellular mesoglea between them; (3) radially symmetrical; (4) cnidoblasts — specialised stinging cells containing nematocysts (coiled thread-like structures used for defence and prey capture); (5) single body opening — coelenteron (gastrovascular cavity); (6) two body forms: Polyp (sessile, cylindrical — e.g. Hydra, Adamsia) and Medusa (free-swimming, umbrella-shaped — e.g. Aurelia). Some alternate between both forms. Examples by form: Hydra — polyp only; Obelia — both polyp and medusa; Aurelia — medusa dominant; Physalia — colonial polyp (Portuguese man-of-war); corals — colonial polyp.
Go deeper
The mesoglea in jellyfish is largely responsible for their buoyancy and jelly-like appearance. Metagenesis is the alternation of polyp and medusa generations — seen clearly in Obelia where the asexual polyp produces sexual medusae by budding. Corals secrete calcium carbonate skeletons — this is the basis of coral reefs, among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have seen Hydra as an example of a simple animal. Cnidarians have two body forms — polyp and medusa — and at NEET level you need to know which form each example takes, and the key defining structures like cnidoblasts and nematocysts.
