Class Osteichthyes
Introduction
Goldfish in a bowl, trout in a stream, tuna in the ocean — all are Class Osteichthyes, the bony fish, the most species-rich class of vertebrates on Earth. With over 20,000 species, they dominate aquatic environments. What distinguishes them from their cartilaginous cousins (sharks) is a bony skeleton and a specialised buoyancy organ — the air bladder.
Core concept
Class Osteichthyes (bony fish) features: (1) endoskeleton made of bone; (2) body covered with cycloid/ctenoid scales; (3) four pairs of gills covered by an operculum (gill cover); (4) air bladder (swim bladder) — regulates buoyancy; (5) cold-blooded (poikilothermous); (6) mostly oviparous; (7) lateral line system for detecting water vibrations. Two sub-groups: Actinopterygii (ray-finned fish — fins supported by bony rays; most common; e.g. Labeo — rohu, Catla, Clarias — catfish, Hippocampus — seahorse, Exocoetus — flying fish, Anguilla — eel) and Sarcopterygii (lobe-finned fish — fleshy fins with bone; e.g. Latimeria — coelacanth, lungfish). Hippocampus is unique — males brood eggs.
Go deeper
The lobe-finned fish (Latimeria — coelacanth) was thought extinct until rediscovered in 1938 — a famous 'living fossil.' Lobe-finned fish are the evolutionary ancestors of tetrapods (amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) — their fleshy fins are homologous to tetrapod limbs. Hippocampus (seahorse) is notable because the male has a brood pouch and carries developing eggs — male pregnancy.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you learned that bony fish have a skeleton made of bone. Class Osteichthyes is the largest class of vertebrates — at NEET level, know the key features and the two sub-groups: ray-finned and lobe-finned fish.
