Body Symmetry

Introduction

Cut a starfish through the middle in five different ways and each half looks the same. Cut a flatworm lengthwise through its centre — only one cut gives matching halves. Cut a sponge any way you like — no two halves will match. These three scenarios describe the three types of body symmetry in the animal kingdom, and NEET uses them to sort phyla into fundamental groups.

Core concept

Animals are classified by body symmetry into three types: (1) Asymmetry — no plane of symmetry divides the body into equal halves (e.g. Porifera — sponges); (2) Radial symmetry — any plane passing through the central axis divides the body into equal halves (e.g. Coelenterata/Cnidaria, Echinodermata — adult); (3) Bilateral symmetry — only ONE plane (the sagittal plane) divides the body into equal mirror-image halves (e.g. Platyhelminthes, Aschelminthes, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Chordata). Bilateral symmetry is associated with cephalisation — the development of a head end with concentrated sense organs — which is an evolutionary advantage for directional movement.

Go deeper

Radial symmetry suits sessile or slow-moving organisms that encounter their environment equally from all sides. Bilateral symmetry suits active, directional movers — the head-end meets the environment first. Echinoderms are unique: larvae are bilaterally symmetrical, adults are radially symmetrical — a secondary adaptation to slow, non-directional movement.

From Class 10

You learned in Class 10 that animals have different body shapes. Body symmetry is a fundamental classification character — at NEET level, you need to know the three types and which phyla belong to each.
