Vascular Tissue System

இதை நினைவில் கொள்ளுங்கள்: Dicot = Open, Monocot = Closed.

Introduction

The vascular tissue system consists of xylem and phloem — responsible for transport of water, minerals, and organic solutes throughout the plant.

Core concept

Xylem: tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma, xylem fibers. Vessels and tracheids are dead cells with thick lignified walls. Phloem: sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem parenchyma, phloem fibers. Sieve tubes are living (no nucleus). Companion cells control sieve tubes.

Go deeper

Protoxylem (first formed, smaller) vs. metaxylem (later formed, larger). In roots: exarch (proto outside). In stems: endarch (proto inside). This helps distinguish root from stem in cross-section.

From Class 10

You know xylem carries water up and phloem carries food. Together they form the vascular system — the plant's transport network.

  1. NEET 2015

Vascular bundles in monocotyledons are considered closed because

    1. cambium is absent
    2. there are no vessels with perforations
    3. xylem is surrounded all around by phloem
    4. a bundle sheath surrounds each bundle

(A) cambium is absent

  2. NEET 2015

A major characteristic of the monocot root is the presence of

    1. scattered vascular bundles
    2. vasculature without cambium
    3. cambium sandwiched between phloem and xylem along the radius
    4. open vascular bundles

(B) vasculature without cambium

  3. NEET 2014

Tracheids differ from other tracheary elements in

    1. having casparian strips
    2. being imperforate
    3. lacking nucleus
    4. being lignified

(B) being imperforate
