Isobilateral Leaf Anatomy
Introduction
Isobilateral (isolateral) leaf, found in monocots (like grass), has similar upper and lower surfaces with mesophyll not differentiated into palisade and spongy layers.
Core concept
Upper and lower epidermis: equal stomata on both surfaces (amphistomatous). Mesophyll: not differentiated — all cells are similar with chloroplasts. Vascular bundles surrounded by bundle sheath. Bulliform cells in upper epidermis. No distinct palisade or spongy layer.
Go deeper
Without distinct palisade/spongy differentiation, light capture is less efficient per unit area than in dorsiventral leaves. Grasses compensate with high leaf area and C4 photosynthesis (Kranz anatomy) in many species.
From Class 10
Monocot leaves look the same on both sides — both surfaces are similar. This is the isobilateral leaf structure.
