Family
குடும்பம் (Family)
Stop confusing Genus and Family. A Family is a cluster of related genera, not just a collection of species. If you miss this hierarchy, you lose the entire taxonomic sequence.
The idea
Family is a taxonomic category ranking above Genus and below Order. It groups related genera based on fewer similarities compared to lower categories. In plants, families are delineated by both vegetative and reproductive morphological features.
Why it matters
It allows for the grouping of genera that share broader, less specific common traits.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the suffix: '-aceae' for plant families. Expect questions asking to arrange taxonomic categories in descending order of similarity. Remember: as you move from Species to Family, the number of common characteristics decreases.
Clinical significance
In medical taxonomy, understanding families is critical for identifying pathogenic vectors. For example, all mosquitoes belong to the family Culicidae; failing to distinguish family-level traits leads to incorrect vector control strategies for diseases like Dengue or Malaria.
Introduction
The word family in everyday life means a group of closely related individuals. In taxonomy, it means exactly that — but formalised, named, and placed at a precise level in the hierarchy. The family Felidae contains every cat that has ever lived, from your house cat to the sabre-toothed tiger. What they all share is not just a resemblance — it is an ancestor.
Core concept
A family is a taxonomic rank above genus and below order. It groups related genera that share a common ancestry and a set of defining characteristics. The naming convention NEET tests:Animal families end in -idae: Felidae (cats), Hominidae (great apes), Canidae (dogs)Plant families end in -aceae: Solanaceae (potato family), Poaceae (grass family), Fabaceae (legume family)Examples:Family Felidae → Genus Panthera, FelisFamily Hominidae → Genus Homo, PanFamily Solanaceae → Genus Solanum, Nicotiana
Go deeper
The suffix rule is not merely a convention — it is part of the international codes of nomenclature (ICBN for plants, ICZN for animals). A name that does not follow the suffix rule is technically invalid under the code. NEET sometimes presents family names with incorrect suffixes as distractors. Also note: some plant families have alternative traditional names that remain in use despite not following the -aceae convention (e.g., Gramineae for Poaceae, Leguminosae for Fabaceae). NEET occasionally uses both forms.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have encountered the fact that cats and lions are related. In Class 11, you learn the formal term for that relationship at a specific level: they belong to the same family — Felidae. Family is the rank in the taxonomic hierarchy that sits between Order and Genus, and it groups genera that share a common evolutionary origin.
