Portal Systems in Frog
தவளையின் போர்டல் மண்டலங்கள்
Do not confuse the portal system with the systemic circulation. In frogs, blood does not return directly to the heart from the gut or hind limbs. It must pass through a capillary bed in a secondary organ first. This is a physiological detour, not a shortcut.
The idea
Frogs exhibit two distinct portal systems. The hepatic portal system carries blood from the digestive tract to the liver via the hepatic portal vein. The renal portal system collects blood from the lower body parts and transports it to the kidneys through the renal portal veins. These systems ensure that blood is processed or filtered by these specific organs before entering the general circulation.
Why it matters
These systems allow for the processing of absorbed nutrients by the liver and the filtration of metabolic wastes by the kidneys before systemic circulation.
NEET lens
NEET frequently tests the distinction between hepatic and renal portal systems. Remember: Hepatic is common to both frogs and humans, but the renal portal system is absent in humans. Expect 'Match the Following' or 'True/False' statements regarding the origin and destination of these veins. Do not memorize the vein names; understand the flow direction.
Clinical significance
Humans lack a renal portal system, which is a critical evolutionary distinction. If a human possessed a renal portal system, systemic toxins would be filtered directly by the kidneys, but drug absorption kinetics would be drastically altered. In frogs, this system is essential for maintaining homeostasis during periods of low cardiac output.
Introduction
Portal systems in frogs are specialized blood vessel circuits where blood from one organ passes through a capillary bed before returning to the heart.
Core concept
Hepatic portal system: blood from intestine → hepatic portal vein → liver → hepatic vein → posterior vena cava → heart. Renal portal system: blood from hind limbs → renal portal vein → kidney → renal vein → posterior vena cava. Pituitary portal system: also present in vertebrates.
Go deeper
The hepatic portal system ensures nutrients absorbed from intestine first go to liver for processing before reaching general circulation. The liver can detoxify, store glycogen, and process nutrients.
From Class 10
You know blood vessels carry blood. Portal systems are special blood vessel arrangements where blood passes through two capillary beds.
