Pollen-Pistil Interaction

மகரந்த-சூலக இடைவினை

NCERT Class 12 · Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants · 1 NEET question

Nature does not tolerate biological errors. Pollen-pistil interaction is not a passive landing; it is a rigorous molecular screening process. If the pollen is incompatible, the pistil rejects it immediately. NEET examiners love to test this 'rejection mechanism' because it defines reproductive isolation.

The idea

Pollen-pistil interaction is a dynamic process of chemical dialogue between the pollen grain and the stigma. The pistil recognizes compatible pollen through specific protein-protein interactions. Upon recognition, the pollen grain germinates to produce a pollen tube that grows through the style to reach the ovary. This process involves continuous chemical signaling to promote or inhibit pollen tube growth.

Why it matters

It ensures that only compatible pollen of the same species fertilizes the ovule, preventing wastage of reproductive resources on incompatible or wrong-species pollen.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the 'chemical dialogue' aspect. Memorize that this is a continuous, dynamic process, not a one-time event. Expect questions on how the pistil promotes or inhibits pollen tube growth based on compatibility.

Clinical significance

In human reproductive biology, this is analogous to the immunological recognition of 'self' versus 'non-self' cells. Failure in such molecular recognition systems leads to autoimmune disorders or rejection of foreign tissues. Just as the pistil prevents cross-species fertilization, the human immune system prevents the survival of incompatible biological entities.

Introduction

Pollen-pistil interaction is the complex molecular dialogue between pollen and pistil after pollination — including pollen recognition, acceptance or rejection (self-incompatibility), pollen germination, pollen tube growth, and guidance to the ovule.

Core concept

Steps: (1) Pollen lands on stigma. (2) Recognition: stigma surface proteins interact with pollen coat proteins → compatible? (3) Compatible pollen: hydrated by stigma exudate → germinates → pollen tube grows through style. (4) Incompatible pollen (self or wrong species): rejected → tube not formed or arrested. (5) Pollen tube grows through transmitting tissue of style (guided by gradients of Ca²⁺, GABA, defensin-like proteins). (6) Tube enters ovule via micropyle → enters synergid → ruptures → releases 2 male gametes. (7) Double fertilization occurs. Synergid role: filiform apparatus secretes attractants → guides pollen tube.

Go deeper

Chemical signaling: LURE peptides (from synergids) attract pollen tube into ovary → micropyle entry. Ca²⁺ gradient along style guides pollen tube growth. Defensin-like proteins signal pollen tube to stop growing (prevent more than one tube per ovule — polyspermy block in plants).

From Class 10

Not all pollen can fertilize all flowers. After landing on the stigma, pollen and pistil 'communicate' — the pistil accepts compatible pollen and rejects incompatible or foreign pollen.
