Pollen Grain Structure
மகரந்தத் துகளின் அமைப்பு
Pollen grains are not just dust; they are the most resilient male gametophytes in the plant kingdom. Their survival is guaranteed by a chemical armor that defies fossilization. If you think they are simple, you are losing marks.
The idea
Pollen grains possess a two-layered wall: the outer exine and the inner intine. The exine is composed of sporopollenin, one of the most resistant organic materials known, capable of withstanding high temperatures, strong acids, and alkali. The intine is a thin, continuous layer made of cellulose and pectin. Germ pores are specific sites on the exine where sporopollenin is absent, facilitating the emergence of the pollen tube.
Why it matters
Sporopollenin provides extreme resistance to environmental stress, ensuring the survival of the male gametophyte until it reaches the stigma.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the chemical composition of exine and the function of germ pores. Expect matching-type questions or 'incorrect statement' identification. Remember: Sporopollenin is absent at germ pores, not the entire exine. This is a high-frequency topic appearing 9 times in the last decade.
Clinical significance
Sporopollenin-rich pollen grains are potent aeroallergens. Inhalation triggers severe respiratory conditions like bronchial asthma and bronchitis. Parthenium, or carrot grass, is a notorious example of a pollen-induced allergen that has contaminated wheat imports in India.
Introduction
A pollen grain is the male gametophyte of angiosperms, typically consisting of two cells (vegetative cell and generative cell) enclosed in a two-layered wall (exine and intine), produced in anthers.
Core concept
Structure: Two-layered wall: Exine (outer): sporopollenin — extremely resistant to physical/chemical degradation. Has apertures (pores/colpi) where pollen tube emerges. Species-specific sculpting → used in palynology. Intine (inner): cellulose and pectin — forms pollen tube. Contents: Vegetative cell (tube cell): large, with most cytoplasm. Forms pollen tube. Generative cell: smaller, divides to form 2 male gametes. In situ (2-celled pollen, e.g., wheat) or after landing on stigma (3-celled pollen, e.g., most plants). Viability: pollen viable for minutes to months. Pollen banks for conservation.
Go deeper
Sporopollenin: the most chemically resistant biological molecule known. Survives acids, alkalis, high temperatures. Why so resistant? Pollen must survive environmental exposure during dispersal. Fossil pollen (palynology) preserved for millions of years in sediment → used to reconstruct ancient vegetation and climate.
From Class 10
Pollen grains are the male gametophytes of flowering plants. Each grain contains the male gametes that will fertilize the egg. Their structure is highly adapted for dispersal and fertilization.
