NCERT Class 12 · Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants · 2 NEET questions

Nature sometimes bypasses the fundamental law of sexual reproduction. Apomixis produces seeds without fertilization, effectively cloning the parent. Do not confuse this with Parthenocarpy; one produces seeds, the other does not.

The idea

Apomixis is a form of asexual reproduction that mimics sexual reproduction. In this process, the diploid egg cell is formed without reduction division and develops into an embryo without fertilization. It is commonly observed in species of the Asteraceae family and grasses. This mechanism ensures the production of seeds that are genetically identical to the parent plant.

Why it matters

It allows for the production of seeds that are genetically identical to the parent, which is highly beneficial for maintaining hybrid vigor in agriculture without segregation.

NEET lens

NEET asks this 8 times in the last decade. Focus on the definition: 'Seeds without fertilization'. Memorize the examples: Asteraceae and grasses. Trap: Examiners often swap 'Apomixis' with 'Parthenocarpy' or 'Polyembryony' in matching questions; keep your definitions distinct.

Clinical significance

In agricultural ecosystems, apomixis prevents the segregation of desirable traits in hybrid crops. If this mechanism fails, hybrid vigor is lost in subsequent generations, leading to reduced crop yields. Understanding this is critical for maintaining food security and stable genetic lines in plant biotechnology.

Introduction

Apomixis is the production of seeds without fertilization — the embryo develops from the egg cell (or other cells) without male gamete fusion, producing offspring genetically identical to the mother plant.

Core concept

Types: Agamospermy (seed without fertilization): Diplospory: unreduced embryo sac from MMC without meiosis → egg (2n) develops parthenogenetically. Apospory: somatic (nucellar) cells form embryo sac without meiosis → 2n embryo. Adventive embryony: embryo develops from nucellus or integument cells (not from egg) → often seen alongside normal embryo → polyembryony. Examples: grasses (Poa, Paspalum), Citrus (adventive embryony), Mango, dandelion. Advantages for agriculture: True-breeding offspring (maternal genotype preserved). Hybrid vigor maintained across generations. No need for pollination — guaranteed seed set.

Go deeper

Difference from vegetative propagation: apomixis produces seeds (with seed coat, endosperm, dispersal mechanisms) — just without fertilization. Useful commercially: apomictic hybrids would maintain F1 vigor in subsequent generations without re-hybridization → enormous cost savings in hybrid seed industry.

From Class 10

Some plants produce seeds without fertilization — the embryo develops without a male gamete fusing with the egg. This asexual seed production is called apomixis.
