Indeterminate Growth

வரையறையற்ற வளர்ச்சி

NCERT Class 11 · Plant Growth and Development · 0 NEET questions

Animals stop growing after reaching maturity. Plants do not. This fundamental difference is the reason why a Banyan tree can live for centuries while human growth is strictly finite.

The idea

Plants exhibit indeterminate growth because of meristems. These are regions of active cell division located at specific sites. New cells are continuously added to the plant body throughout its life cycle. This is defined as the open form of growth.

Why it matters

This allows plants to continuously adapt to their environment by adding new organs like leaves or branches throughout their lifespan. It compensates for their inability to move to favorable conditions.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the term 'open form of growth'. Do not confuse this with determinate growth seen in leaves or fruits. Remember: Meristems are the site of indeterminate growth. Expect a question matching 'meristematic activity' with 'unlimited growth'.

Clinical significance

In humans, loss of growth control leads to neoplasia or cancer. Unlike plants, where meristematic activity is localized and regulated, uncontrolled cell division in humans is pathological. Indeterminate growth in plants is a survival strategy; in humans, it is a disease state.

Introduction

Indeterminate growth is the capacity for unlimited growth throughout an organism's life, characteristic of plants, due to the presence of permanently meristematic regions (apical and lateral meristems).

Core concept

Plants show indeterminate growth because: Meristems — regions of undifferentiated, actively dividing cells — persist throughout the plant's life. Apical meristems (shoot apex, root apex): primary growth (length). Lateral meristems (vascular cambium, cork cambium): secondary growth (girth). Cells produced by meristems continuously differentiate into leaves, stems, roots, flowers, etc. Plant cells retain totipotency — capacity to regenerate an entire plant. Animals: cells differentiate early → fixed adult size (determinate growth).

Go deeper

Meristematic cells are unique: small, dense cytoplasm, large nucleus, thin cell wall, no central vacuole, high metabolic activity. They are essentially stem cells — self-renewing and able to produce differentiated cells. The shoot apical meristem (SAM) is organized into zones: central zone (stem cells), peripheral zone (organ initials), rib zone (internal tissue).

From Class 10

Unlike animals that stop growing when they reach adult size, plants continue growing throughout their lives. This lifelong growth capacity is called indeterminate growth.
